Renato Veiga joins Villarreal after signing seven-year contract

Portuguese defender Renato Veiga has officially completed his permanent transfer to Villarreal in a €29.5 million deal, with a guaranteed €24.5 million plus up to €5 million in performance-related variables.

Veiga signs a seven-year contract to 2032 with an option for an additional year. The club’s manager, Marcelino, played a key role in persuading Veiga, who was attracted by the chance for regular starts and a prominent role in a Champions League squad.

Competition for Veiga’s signature had been stiff, with media reports linking him to top European clubs including Borussia Dortmund, Atletico Madrid, and Juventus.

The 22‑year‑old defender came through Sporting CP’s academy, enjoyed a Bundesliga loan at Augsburg in 2023, then moved to Basel before Chelsea acquired him in July 2024 for approximately €14 million.

During his sole season at Stamford Bridge, he made 18 appearances and earned his first caps for the Portuguese senior national team. In January 2025, he was loaned to Juventus, where he featured 15 times.

The move not only provides Veiga with the stability and platform he craved ahead of Portugal’s 2026 World Cup campaign but also reinforces Villarreal’s backline, especially important as the club deals with long-term injuries to Willy Kambwala and Logan Costa.
