Ahead of his side’s La Liga clash against Getafe, Valencia head coach Carlos Corberán addressed the media on Thursday, offering insight into squad dynamics, transfer priorities, and the challenges of facing an in-form opponent.
Corberán struck a calm but determined tone, dismissing any suggestion of unrest in the squad following recent speculation involving Sergi Canós. The midfielder had taken to social media to deny claims he criticised the club or leaked information, and his coach was quick to downplay the matter.
“I respect any opinion that a player might have. If he’s posted that, it’s because he understands that to be the case, and I have nothing to add,” Corberán said. ““”I’ve never had any problems with any player in the squad. Everyone has behaved professionally. I believe in honesty,””” he said.
Transfer priorities
With the summer window still open, Valencia continue to explore reinforcements. Corberán confirmed that the club were working to finalise the arrival of Belgian winger Largie Ramazani on loan from Leeds United, while also emphasising the need for another striker.
“From a numerical perspective, we needed two players to come in,” he explained. “We’re lacking someone in the centre forward position. We have two forwards, and Danjuma can alternate between that role and the left wing. It doesn’t make sense to talk about players who aren’t here yet, but we’re working on it.”
On Ramazani specifically, Corberán highlighted the player’s versatility.
“He’s versatile; he can play on the right or the left. He has speed, can receive the ball with his feet, and depending on which side he plays, he can also run at space. He allows you to stretch the play and get in behind the opposing team.”
Tactical flexibility
Asked whether he might adopt a three-man defence, Corberán stressed that Valencia’s identity mattered more than formations.
“The most important thing isn’t the formation, but rather our identity. It has to be solid and aggressive, with control and progression,” he said. “Sometimes a formation helps you achieve that. We analyse each match and try to make the best decisions based on the game and the opposition.”
Tomorrow’s match will also see young full-back Jesús Vázquez given a chance in the starting lineup. With José Gayà suspended and other absentees in the squad, Corberán expressed confidence in the 21-year-old.
“Tomorrow will be Jesús’s turn to play, and we’re fully confident he’ll put in a good performance,” he added.
Respect for Getafe
Getafe arrive at Mestalla with momentum after winning their opening two away fixtures, and Corberán made it clear his side were not underestimating the challenge.
“Without a doubt, they’re a team in form, having managed to win two away games at two difficult grounds. That only happens when there’s a good coach and good players in place.”
He also singled out Getafe midfielder Chrisantus Uche, who has impressed in the early stages of the season.
“He was spoken about as a Primera RFEF player, and he’s proven to be a top-class talent. When you play against top-level players, that should increase your motivation,” Corberán remarked.
