César Azpilicueta has joined Sevilla on a one-year contract after completing a free transfer from Atlético Madrid. The deal includes an option for a further year, giving the club flexibility as the veteran defender enters the twilight of his career.

Azpilicueta, 36, spent last season at Atlético, where he made 20 appearances across all competitions. Although age is no longer on his side, the Spaniard remains a valuable asset thanks to his leadership qualities, professionalism, and versatility.

Sevilla, who have been active in the transfer market this summer, will count on his experience as he becomes their fourth signing of the window.

The former Chelsea captain is best remembered for his decade at Stamford Bridge, where he lifted multiple trophies, including the Premier League, FA Cup, Europa League, and Champions League. His reputation as a reliable and adaptable defender was cemented during that period, making him one of the most consistent performers in English football.

For Sevilla, the signing addresses a need for depth and stability at the back. While Azpilicueta has been regularly deployed at left-back in recent seasons, he is equally comfortable at right-back or in central defence, giving manager Quique Sánchez Flores tactical flexibility. His arrival also adds a layer of leadership to a side looking to improve on last season’s inconsistent league campaign.
